Chart Review
Chart Review serves several purposes. Students learn to navigate the electronic health record system and learn good record-keeping practices before they begin direct patient care. They work with both RevolutionEHR, used in all NSUOCO clinics for our optometric exams and Cerner Millennium, used within the Cherokee Nation Health System for the rest of their healthcare records. By reviewing actual clinic records they learn the importance of recording accurate and thorough data in an organized fashion. These skills are further practiced during Clinic Observation as these students often record data in the EHR while they observe more senior students examine patients in primary care clinics. Clinical data collected during chart review exercises is analyzed by the Assistant Dean for Clinical Affairs and reported as part of our clinical quality assurance process. During the review of individual records, follow-up appointments are often checked. If needed, further analysis by faculty may lead to addition or updates to these future appointments so each patient receives the most appropriate ongoing care. This process helps students learn the importance of developing quality assurance programs in their future practices.
