Specialty Care

The Specialty Care Clinic is a referral clinic where advanced ocular disease and ocular care happens.  This clinic is heavy in dry eye management, laser procedures, eyelid lesion removals, and advanced imaging and diagnostics of the eye.  Patients seen in the specialty care clinic are referred in from our other clinic sites or from outside clinics in Oklahoma as well as surrounding states.

Our students are trained to perform and interpret the following procedures and tests in specialty care clinic:

Laser Clinic

  • Selective Laser Trabeculoplasty (SLT) - Laser procedure which is used in the most common forms of glaucoma to help facilitate the drain of the eye working better and lowering eye pressure.
  • YAG laser capsulotomy (YAG cap) - Laser procedure that is done to clear a cloudy membrane that can form after cataract surgery.
  • Laser Peripheral Iridotomy (LPI) - Laser procedure that is done to help open up the drain or “angle” of the eye and facilitate the proper flow of fluid in the eye.

OD Surgery Clinic

  • Eyelid lesion and lump and bump biopsy and removal - Many patients have lesions or so called “lumps and bumps” on their eyelids.  These lesions most often are benign, but they can also sometimes be cancerous as well.  During Specialty Care Clinic, our students, residents, and attending doctors will work together to biopsy many of these lesions so we know exactly what they are, and once they are identified, then proper management can take place which may include fully removing the lesion or referring to a specialist for management.

Specialty Care Clinic

  • Dry eye management - Millions of patients suffer from dry eye, and due to lifestyle changes over the past 10+ years (digital devices like phones, tablets, computers, etc) dry eye is increasing in prevalence.  Specialized dry eye tests, including tear lab, inflammadry, meibography, among other tests are routinely done in our advanced dry eye clinic which is a part of specialty care clinic.  Through these advanced diagnostic tests, patients with dry eye will receive top notch care and the proper recommendations for dry eye management.  Dry eye treatment devices used in our dry eye clinic include Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy and in-office heat treatments such as MiboFlow and Tear Care.
  • Advanced Imaging and Diagnostics - State-of-the art equipment such as OCT-angiography, ultrasound biomicroscopy (UBM), specular microscopy, and A-scan measurements are all specialized pieces of equipment that help to better diagnose and understand a variety of ocular disease conditions from the front of the eye to the back.
